En 2004, Akon publie son tout premier opus, « Trouble » où Akon mêle avec brio hip, groove et soul, portée par un chant africain lumineux et intense. Dans son tube « Locked Up » comme dans l'ensemble de ses chansons, le musicien raconte les passages sombres de sa vie, notamment ces moments difficiles passés en prison. Mais on peut aussi retrouver des titres plus funs, notamment le single « Bananza (Belly Dance) ». Par ailleurs, Akon est aussi un musicien engagé et concerné par la scène artistique sénégalaise. Il souhaite notamment aider les jeunes artistes à tenter leur chance dans la sphère musicale américaine et apporter au Sénégal de nouveaux moyens de production et de diffusion de la musique. Akon a par ailleurs monté son propre label au Sénégal, intitulé AkonLive Afrik ainsi qu'un label américain, Konvict, afin de d'aider les musiciens tout juste sortis de prison

Akon, whose real name Aliaune Thiam, was born in 1979 in Senegal. His parents left the country to settle in the United States where the boy discovers a new musical culture and especially hip-hop. He credits his father (Mor Thiam), percussionist, the love of music and the passion does not leave, especially in the worst moments he spends in jail for petty theft. There, Akon is developing its texts and clings with courage and conviction to the music. He is right, because when it was first released, after a tour of some homes discs with a model it is obligated to release an album, which will come in 2004. "Trouble" is a nice mixture of hip-hop and soul, a style that is very special and tubes "Locked Up" and "Lonely" by selling millions of copies in the States and in Europe. His second album, "Dark Light Shadows", scheduled for 2006 should meet the same success as its predecessor.

Le chanteur sénégalais Akon cartonne avec le single Lonely, extrait de son album Trouble. Il avoue lui-même qu'il était conscient du potentiel de ce morceau, mais ne pensait pas qu'il deviendrait un hit avant même sa sortie officielle.

"Je me disais bien que si je sortais un jour Lonely en single, il cartonnerait. J'ai fait un aller-retour en Europe et quand je suis revenu, le disque était au top 10. C'était un truc d'autant plus fou qu'on ne voulait pas le sortir avant l'été, mais il y a eu des fuites".

Lonely vient de gagner sept places et est désormais 5ème du Billboard américain, tandis que l'album Trouble se classe à la 29è position.
